Plan Your Visit Tips for Families
Climbing Is Dangerous! Fewer climbers, less distraction. Plan one adult - one kid sessions rather than group meets to develop safe climbing habits and risk awareness.
All visitors entering the gym floor past the reception, lounge, and retail area must check in at the Welcome Desk. This applies to everyone, regardless of their activity in the gym: climbing, supervising kids, or spectating.
Actively supervise children under age 14 at all times. Know and obey all gym rules. Our staff is here to help and clarify any rules for the safety of all visitors in the gym.
The Learning Area may not be open for drop-in climbing when you visit. We prioritize the Learning Area for weekday classes starting at 3PM and later and birthday parties on Sundays. Please check our youth calendar here.

What is Bouldering?
Bouldering is a form of climbing without the use of ropes, knots, or carabiners. It's an activity that combines physical exercise with problem-solving as you navigate routes on the wall to reach the top.
How high are your walls?
Our climbing walls are 13 feet high, with thick safety pads provided to soften landings. All along the upper parts of the walls there are comfortable grey holds to help you climb down.
Is bouldering dangerous?
Yes. All falls are ground falls, as there are no ropes or harnesses to mitigate your fall. To ensure your safety and the safety of all people in the gym, you must obey the gym rules at all times.
Who needs to sign a waiver?
Anyone who enters the gym past the Welcome Desk, whether to climb, exercise, or spectate, must complete a waiver and watch our orientation video. Waivers are valid for one year and must be renewed annually.
How do I complete a waiver for a minor?
Waivers for minors must be signed by their parent or legal guardian. The parent or legal guardian should initial and sign the waiver in their own name, then add the minor(s) at the end of the form.
What are supervising rules for kids in the gym?
All children under the age of 14 must be actively supervised by an adult. One adult may supervise a maximum of two children under the age of 14. Supervising adults are responsible for ensuring their children adhere to gym rules and do not endanger themselves or others.
Do I need to pay for gym access if I am only supervising my kid(s)?
Supervising adults who do not wish to climb do not need to purchase a pass. However, everyone entering the gym is required to complete a waiver.
Do I need to take a class before climbing at Half Moon Bouldering?
No prior experience or classes are required, but warmly recommended. One session introductory classes are Bouldering Fundamentals (ages 12+) and Family Bouldering (ages 4+). These classes are included in membership. For kids ages 5+ we offer Climb After Class, a monthly beginner class that meets once per week.
We welcome climbers of all levels. Upon your arrival, our staff will provide a short orientation and a tour of the gym, allowing you to climb at your own pace. Our team is always happy to answer questions and offer climbing pointers upon request.
Do I need any special equipment to boulder?
Only climbing shoes are required. We also recommend using chalk (liquid or chalk socks) to improve your grip. All necessary equipment is available for rent or purchase at our facility.
What rental shoe sizes do you have?
We have sizes ranging from toddlers 10 to adults 16. If we do not have a specific size in our rental fleet (typically smaller than size 8 toddlers), your child may wear their own pair of tight-fitting, closed-toe, and clean shoes, used exclusively within the gym.
What should I wear?
We recommend wearing comfortable athletic clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Please avoid excessively baggy clothing, as it can get caught on holds. For safety, we advise against wearing sharp or dangly jewelry, including wedding rings. Long fingernails can also pose a risk of injury.
Do you have 'family-friendly' climbing?
Absolutely! We are committed to supporting intergenerational climbing. Bouldering is a social sport that is best enjoyed in pairs or small groups. We strive to create an environment where families can develop into active and supportive climbing partners, regardless of age.
Our family is new to climbing. Do you have activities for us outside of scheduled classes?
We do! We love to give tips and suggest activities to keep families engaged with fun challenges and games. Please ask us about Climbing Bingoes, the Floor is Lava, Endurance Relay, and other fun activities.
Is there a minimum age to climb?
We welcome individuals of all ages and abilities to explore all climbing areas. Our recommended age for beginner climbers is 4+. Certain areas of the gym, such as the weight room, are restricted to users under the age of 14.
Is there a designated area for beginners or families?
We encourage everyone to explore all climbing areas, regardless of age or skill level, and engage with climbers in the gym to exchange ideas and tips. Our learning area features a variety of routes suitable for climbers of all abilities and ages.
Do you offer beginner classes?
Yes. Bouldering Fundamentals is recommended for ages 12+. Family Bouldering is recommended for intergenerational pairs: one adult and one child aged 4+. These introductory classes are included in our membership. Not-yet members can book them at an affordable price.
